So, what's this website about?
It's a story, a story about identity, voice, empowerment, strength and weakness, self-reflection, grit, resilience and the power of connections and community.
In reflecting on my own story, I wondered how to facilitate the growth of these traits in other learners, especially the staff and students in my community.
I believe we grow when we gain a sense of our identity, past, present and ever-forming. I saw connections between our growth as humans and the growth of trees. Would it be feasible to explore the traits of trees and ecosystems as a metaphor for ourselves? What might happen if teachers intentionally invested time and effort into exploring identity through the study of nature?
I invited colleagues to pick a seedling of their own and to invite their students to do the same this September. I told them I would send them a weekly reflection that they and their class could use as a springboard into being curious about this people/tree connection. To my delight, quite a few of my brave and trusting peers agreed. It's on for this September! Are you interested in participating yourself? With your class? Send me a line (on my contact page) and I will send you the reflections weekly. Who knows what this can grow? We all need a little Tree-L-C !
